How long have you been working with family businesses?
I have been working with family businesses for my entire career – over 25 years. What I do is to help people + business achieve financial goals. Some of the families are now into third generation, but at whatever stage it is always exciting.

What’s one of the most common mistakes you see in family businesses?
The most common mistake is making assumptions about what other family members want. They don’t check-in and ask the obvious questions. If they do, it usually doesn’t go far enough to really understand and follow that through. As a result, the management of the business doesn’t work well together, a succession falls apart, and the family wealth gets broken up. The outcome can be so much better if family really engages with each other about what they want.

What is your “uh ha” moment with your clients?

My “uh ha”moment is usually when I have built an understanding of a client’s goals and aspirations and then have an insight as to how to help them achieve that – whether through running a better business, helping them through a succession process or saving tax. It’s the challenge of tailoring an exceptional solution built on deep client knowledge that makes my job a pleasure.
