‘Expect the unexpected’. We have heard the phrase many times and probably think we have things generally under control. We have a pretty good idea of how things will play out. But how do we react when things go wrong? Do we have the right mechanisms in place to minimize the fall out? Are we really protected and prepared?

‘Managing Risk in your Family Business’ is the theme for the upcoming FBA SA event on 22 October. Expert presenters from media, PR, law, and insurance will discuss this issue from the family business perspective, discuss case studies and offer advice on how to best manage risk in your organisation. This is a must for all FBA members and the final event before the Hall of Fame end of year dinner on 18 November.

Event Reviews
Ensuring the Next Generation succeeds in the family business can be a challenge. “Helping the NxG Succeed” event held on Thursday 14 August was  very ably facilitated by Lowen Partridge (Peartree Marketing) with our Next Gen panel members – Zoe Detmold (Detmold Group) and Tegan Webb (Spring Gully Foods) – giving us a good insight as to some of the opportunities and pitfalls they have experienced. We also heard from John Kennett (Kennett Pty Ltd) and Geoff Vogt (Industry Leaders Fund) on what it takes to make the transition from an emerging to a senior leader in the business. The  key take home messages were the importance of communication within the Next Gen group and with the incumbent group; and the need for Next Genners to ask for opportunities to take on leadership projects.

It was great to see so many new faces at the event. Many thanks to KPMG for co-hosting the event

Upcoming FBA Events and Courses

National Conference

Highlights of the National Conference on the Gold Coast included meeting FBA Life Member Ray Michel who is clearly very passionate about FBA. I also enjoyed Sally Paech’s presentation on Beerenberg’s rebranding journey. I’ve seen the new-look products on the shelves, but now I know the full story! It was great to see so many delegates making the most of this opportunity. What stood out to me was that those who succeed are passionate, persistent and willing to seek expert advice.

Congratulations
