How long have you been working with family businesses?

Officially since 2008 but in reality all my working life as I was born into a non-functional family business from which after a lot of consideration, I chose not to join but rather accepted accounting and managerial roles in a number of family businesses before co-founding my own boutique financial services business – Lachlan Partners which was acquired by Shadforth Financial services in 2013.

What’s one of the most common mistakes you see in family businesses?
Where do I start!  If I had to name one, it would be lack of governance and failing to run the business like a business should be run. Family businesses like any business requires measurement metrics which is often lacking. My favourite saying is “If you can’t measure, you can’t manage”.

What is your “uh ha” moment with your clients?
I assist my clients make ‘smart’ financial decisions and with to the best of my ability, doing them no financial harm at whatever stage of life they are at.
