The count down until National Conference has started, but where has the year gone and what has happened in QLD?  Well as the State Manager, I have been working hard to secure a full calendar of events for 2017/18, including an array of new national initiatives and member benefits.  I participated in a QLD Government small business round table which saw discussion on the rise of energy prices and a presentation from Phil Richardson from Department of Energy and Water Supply (more on this a bit later).  And to cap off the last two months the QLD Forum groups went on their annual retreat.  Moving forward I will be embarking on member site visits, so expect a phone call or email to lock in a time to visit your business and learn more about your needs.

As the representative of Family Business Australia each quarter I participate in the QLD Government Small Business Round Table events with heads of other member associations, such as Tourism QLD, QLD Chamber of Commerce and separate industry associations such as Painters, Plumbers, Independent Grocers, Retail and Construction. Along with the Deputy Director General Rebecca Andrews and the small business champion Maree Adshead we discussed the ‘hot topics’ which are effecting the various sectors.  This quarter focused on the rising cost of energy and what effect this was going to have on businesses.  Phil Richardson, Manager – Energy Consumer and Pricing from the Department of Energy and Water Supply presented to the group and clarified the changes to the national electricity rules for embedded networks, which commences on 1 December 2017.  For more information on the changes click here, as well as download the presentation from the department here.  Our next round table will be in October, where we will be discussing “Business Disruption”.  If anyone has any examples or pressing topics they would like me to raise please let me know.

Coming up in the next few months in QLD will be Conversation Series launch, multiple Webinars, Directors Course, Family Business Essentials Course, Chairman’s lunch and of course my birthday 🙂  I look forward to seeing many of you at our events.  On top of all this FBA will be working hard to understand your needs and deliver relevant material, so send through any suggestions.

Help me get to know you and your business, if you have had any exciting news or received awards or good publicity share the love by sending it through, email fbaqld@fambiz.org.au.    If you know of any families in business don’t forget to tell them about FBA, or better yet bring them along to the next event.

Hint for the month:

Write down all your ideas on a piece of paper, even if you think some of them are silly

Quote of the Month:

“Don’t be distracted by criticism.  Remember, the only taste of success some people have is when they take a bite of you.”

– Zig Ziglar, American author, salesman and motivational speaker

Hope this helps till next time
