A big thank you to all that attended Better Family Communication on June 30 at the Hackney Hotel. Facilitated by Elizabeth Tyson from HR Progress, we heard from non-family member Sarah Leo CEO of OpenBook Howden Design & Print on her experiences working in a family business, how they resolve communication issues and what she has learnt. Family business owner John Angove from Angove Family Winemakers and Catherine Sanders, Clinical Psychologist & Family Therapist both sharing effective strategies to better manage communication and relationships within the family and the business.

TheĀ  key “take home” messages were:

  • The importance of beginning the conversation no matter how hard
  • It may be family but when it comes to business all parties have a different role
  • Show respect for each other and ensure the verbal and non-verbal messages match
  • Be professional
  • Keep top of mind, the thought of positive outcomes for all!
